Evolution of the Red Star

Music: Carl Stone. Colored pen-and-ink drawings, like topological maps of biomorphic objects, grow and evolve from the red star. Once the master image is formed, this continuously throbbing, pulsating sight is used to ring changes based on years of optical work. Music and picture work together to create a mood of ecstatic tranquility. The bright colors, beautiful music, surprise at the end, etc. make this a good film for young children. Awards: Sinking Creek Film & Video Festival, 1973; Washington National Student Film Festival, 1974; Brooklyn Independent Filmmakers Exposition, 1974; Vanguard Int'l Competition of Electronic Music for Film, 1974; Humboldt Film Festival, 1974. The Forest King

Set in a suffocating over-commercialized future, a young boy's desire for success and status leads him into a terrifying and deadly new reality through the lens of a mysterious VR game. His desperate father must now race against both time and technology to save his dying son. But the boy is the only one who can save himself, and he must do it before becoming another faceless pawn of the Forest King. Adapted from the poem "The Forest Tsar" written in 1818 by Vasiliy Zhukovsky.

No Neck Joe

No Neck Joe is a kid, maybe 10 years old, whose torso and head are one piece. Five vignettes document the travails and triumphs of having no neck. First, two punks give Joe a wrapped present; he opens the gift to discover a shirt and tie.

Pizzicato Pussycat

January 1955 •English

Mr. and Mrs. Jones hear a piano being played in their living room. They automatically assume it is their cat who is making the music, when in fact, the talented one is a mouse whom the cat has forced into being his stooge to make him famous. The cat is showered with media attention and set to play at Carnegie Hall, where he hopes nobody will notice that he is pantomiming the movements with the keys while the mouse is playing his miniature piano inside the full-scale model.

Opening Night

Cubby the Bear sneaks into the Roxy Opera House on it's opening night and ends up condicting an epic, animal-enacted version of Faust.

The Bully's End

June 1933 •English

A farmer, his family and all the barnyard animals are bullied by the rooster, who is vain and mean to everyone. He thinks one of his hens has cheated on him and knocks out the peacock. He can't stand to see 2 ducks in love and beats up the boy duck to steal his girl. The rooster is challenged to a fight by Runty Duck. Bully Rooster gets drunk on gasoline while the rest of the barnyard animals a partying because of the upcoming fight. The fight starts and Runty Duck seems to be getting the best of Bully Rooster. In the last moments, Runty KOs the Rooster and wins. Every one celebrates the win and carries Runty on their shoulders.

The Cat's Canary

This pre-code entry in Van-Buren's "Aesop's Sound Fables" series finds a Brooklyn-cat in a bowler hat, hanging out in the New Jersey meadow-lands (or somewhere in the wild),who traps a canary and then eats it. Actually, he swallows it and it is flying around in his ribcage. Now, instead of meowing, visual musical notes emerge every time he opens his mouth.
